During our time in Topeka, we made sure to visit the impressive Kansas State Capitol, and it quickly became one of the highlights of our trip. The building itself is absolutely stunning, with beautiful architecture and intricate details and artwork throughout. One of the most memorable parts of the visit was taking the guided tour up to the top of the dome. From there, I was able to step outside and enjoy sweeping views of the city while snapping some incredible photos—a unique experience that’s definitely worth the climb.

As we approached Topeka, we noticed the landscape beginning to change. The wide-open plains gradually gave way to more trees and gently rolling hills, creating a refreshing contrast to what we had seen earlier in the trip. Our campsite reflected that same beauty, with lush green grass on both sides of our site and a cozy ramada that provided a perfect place to relax, cook, or simply enjoy the outdoors—especially helpful if the weather turned rainy.

While in town, we also visited the fascinating Combat Air Museum, which turned out to be the first of many air museums we would explore throughout Kansas. Its collection of historic aircraft and exhibits made it a great stop for aviation enthusiasts. And of course, no visit to Kansas would feel complete without a nod to The Wizard of Oz. This stop marked our first Oz-themed experience of the trip, a fun reminder that Kansas is famously known as the home of Dorothy and the starting point of her unforgettable journey.
