Casa del Desierto

We have been volunteering at the Mother Road Museum in Barstow for about 12 years now. On this day I decided to walk around the building looking for some desert creatures, in particular bugs, to photograph. My friend Stan likes to take extreme close ups of bugs so I wanted to find something unusual. Well I struck out on the bugs but instead found some other interesting angles to photograph and apply special effects.

The top photo shows the corner of the building where the museum is located. The sun was behind a cloud otherwise it is hard to get this corner without bad lighting. The city is in the process of painting the trim around the windows so I see 3 different colors. The museum is in the old Harvey House called Casa del Desierto. Currently the building houses the Chamber of Commerce, the Mother Road Museum, the Western America Railroad Museum (WARM) and the FAA.

It was built by the renowned Fred Harvey Company in a synthesis of Spanish Renaissance and Classical Revival architecture styles. One of the things we enjoy about working there is we meet people from all over the world. Many times I keep a list of all the countries that came in on a particular day. On this day we had visitors from Brazil, South Africa, Denmark, France, Germany Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
