Yours truly, me, took a long trip one Saturday. I had to get suited up in order to go. <grin> Downey CA has a rich heritage in aviation and to the space shuttle program. The Columbia Memorial Space Center is operated by the city of Downey and is built on the site of the former NASA facility. The center was opened in 2009. The center caters more to kids and there were a bunch of Cub Scouts there when we went.

They had a display about flight where you build paper airplanes then they had a machine to launch them for you. It gave you instructions on how to make it turn or do loops and the kids including me were having fun with it.

They also have a full size mock up of the shuttle that was used to see how payloads would fit in the payload bay or how something would fit in the cockpit of the shuttle. The picture of the Apollo Capsule also shows the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in the background. Since I work for Kaiser I had to include it. The facility is a great place to take kids.
