When this bridge was completed in 1913 it was claimed to be the highest concrete bridge in the world. Since we volunteer at the Route 66 Mother Road Museum in Barstow I figured it was time I went to photograph this Route 66 bridge in Pasadena.

Before the bridge was completed crossing the Arroyo Seco was difficult and was done on horseback. Not long after the bridge was completed it got the name locally of suicide bridge. In particular during the Great Depression a number of people committed suicide jumping off the bridge. The bridge is noted for its graceful curve and the arches that support it.

In 1989 after an earthquake the bridge was declared a seismic hazard and closed. The bridge reopened in 1993 with all of its detail and a suicide prevention rail. Renovation costs were 27 million dollars. The bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.
