Lassen Volcanic National Park is located in northeastern California. We were there in mid September and they were getting ready to close come of the facilities and the road through the park was only opened a few weeks before in early August. The picture to the left is of one of the cinder cones you can hike. The path up is very steep to the point where as you take a step sometimes your foot slides back in the cinders.

Mt. Lassen is visible from just about any place in the park. There are areas in the park that are still active with boiling mud pots and fumaroles. The visitors center at the South West entrance is open all year but the road through the park closes due to snow.

The main road through the park reaches an elevation of 8,500 feet and there were still patches of snow. One day when we were driving through near this high point we got a hail storm. Compared to most National Parks we have visited Lassen is not very crowded. The views and scenery at Lassen are just incredible from the starkness of the cinder cone to the beauty of the mountain meadows.
