Lake Erie Islands

Off the shores of Sandusky Ohio in Lake Erie are a string of islands well known in the area as a party destination in the summer months. While visiting, my brother took us on a site seeing tour of Kellys Island and South Bass Island. Kellys was the first stop. Kellys is a bit quieter than South Bass Island. The total population for year round residents is about 400. It is the largest of the American Islands.

The main mode of transportation is golf carts, although you can bring your car over by Ferry but why. It isn't big enough to need a car. Kellys Island is a bit more laid back and quiet. There are a number of restaurants and bars on Kellys Island but no where near as many as Put In Bay on South Bass Island. After a few hours on Kellys we boarded the ferry again for Put In Bay on South Bass Island and lunch of Lake Erie Perch and Walleye. I always have to get some perch when I go back to Ohio.

Put in Bay is famous for its bars and probably the most well known is the Round House Bar. Put in Bay gets very crowded on weekend nights in the summer. Here some visitors see my camera and get silly. South Bass Island is about 3-1/2 miles long and1-1/2 wide. We rode around it on a golf cart again. We were there during the middle of the week and it was not real crowded. But it was incredibly hot and humid.
