Jamestown is located on Jamestown Island in what is called the Virginia
Colony. It was founded on May 14, 1607 and is commonly regarded as the first
permanent English settlement in the United States. It was the capitol of the
English Colony for almost 100 years before it was moved to Williamsburg. |

They are still doing careful excavation on the site to uncover what is left
of old buildings. This fist settlement was founded by the Virginia Company
and they were sent to discover riches to send back to England. After a few
years they found the only thing they could find and grow of value was
tobacco. Jamestown was found some 13 years before Plymouth Rock. |

Jamestown is part of what is called the historic triangle which also
includes Yorktown and Williamsburg. The picture in the lower right was
taken at a Southern Plantation home not to far away we went to visit. |
