Salvation Mountain

This is Salvation Mountain, the creation of Leonard "I want to give you a personal tour" Knight. It is located between Niland and Slab City southeast of the Salton Sea. Slab City is the name give to an old  WW2 Marine Barracks, Camp Dunlap, where only the slabs of concrete from the buildings are left. A number of residents park their campers here and live year round while other snow birds stay for the winter.

Leonard Knight has used thousands of gallons of paint, straw and adobe to create Salvation Mountain. I have found other web sites that want to rip Leonard saying he is nothing but a rip off. But he never once asked us for money.

If you are going to be in the area be sure to stop and he is always willing to take a gallon of paint. He prefers glossy over flat though.

Leonard actually lives on site. He was busily working away creating what he calls his museum the day we were there. He loves to offer to "Give you a personal tour". He doesn't climb up the mountain on all his personal tours though. At the age of 75 when we were there it would get pretty tiring to climb it every time he gave a little tour.

He has a few old vehicles where he has painted every square inch of them. I guess he regularly drives this on into town. But when we were there winter flooding had cut a huge ravine in his driveway so he wasn't going anywhere.
