Salton Sea

We have been to the Salton Sea twice now. The last time was 4-1/2 years ago. The place was formed between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado river broke though some poorly constructed irrigation control dams. It took them almost two years to stop the flow. Since the Sea has no outlet the water became salty hence the name.

The Sea actually changes it's length and width as water fills it up then evaporates away. Back in the 50's and 60'f they started to develop the area as a playground for the rich. But it was this raising and lowering of the water that was one of the factors in it going bust.

There is still pretty good fishing to be done in the Sea and this gentlemen was enjoying his day.

The sea is approximately 35 miles long and 15 miles wide.

The last time we were here in 2001 this trailer had a lot more color on it. It looks like people have stripped what metal was left off the trailer. This link shows pictures in 2001. We saw some very large, pretty birds down at the Southern end of the Sea and decided we need to go back during the winter to see if we can see more of the birds that winter here.
